Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access
  • Ability to evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing vascular access evaluations
  • Capability to initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD, UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Proficiency in machine programming, enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits NVL 160), and conducting machine safety checks
  • Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Ability to observe patients, intervene for intradialytic problems, evaluate hemostasis, apply dressings, and clean blood spills
  • Competence in preparing lab specimens, managing supplies/equipment, and monitoring self-care patients under RN supervision

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and perform evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, and intervene as prescribed
  • Discontinue treatment, obtain reinfusion vital signs, evaluate patient prior to discharge, achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and documentation accurately and timely
  • Report significant changes or unusual findings to RN or supervisor
  • Perform and document interventions for patient status changes
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment, provide interventions, and document/report findings
  • Obtain and prepare lab specimens
  • Clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and maintain safe/clean environment
