Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation for patency and cannulation
Ability to administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), and enabling safety alarms like Narrow Venous Limits (NVL) 160
Ability to obtain and record pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and evaluations
Capability to monitor patients during treatment, evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, and discontinue treatment per procedures
Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, and reporting changes to RN/supervisor
Ability to perform machine safety checks, clean blood spills, prepare lab specimens, and manage supplies/equipment
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
Assistance in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders and procedures
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Ensure safety alarms are enabled and perform machine safety checks
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and evaluations accurately and timely on treatment sheets
Document all treatment-related information, interventions, and patient responses
Report significant changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
Obtain prescribed lab testing and prepare specimens
Clean blood spills, achieve hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patients prior to discharge
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Maintain safe, clean working environment and efficiently utilize supplies to prevent wastage
Support QEP, CQI, patient satisfaction, and process improvement activities
Assist in training direct patient care staff
