Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access, vascular access cannulation, heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to perform setup and operation of hemodialysis machines
  • Skills in evaluating vascular access patency, obtaining vital signs/weight, initiating/discontinuing dialysis treatments, monitoring intradialytic problems, calculating UF goals/treatment time/UF modeling, enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160), machine safety checks
  • Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Maintenance of safe and clean working environment

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and heparin administration as allowed
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor patient response, intervene for intradialytic issues per physician/RN direction
  • Discontinue treatment, obtain vital signs pre-reinfusion, ensure hemostasis, apply dressings, evaluate patient pre-discharge
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, pre/post evaluations on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initials
  • Document all treatment info, report significant changes/unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks, monitor vascular access (arterial/venous pressures), intervene as needed
  • Obtain/p repare lab specimens, clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare/organize supplies/equipment to prevent wastage
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on programs
  • Support QEP/CQI activities and process improvements for quality goals
