Requirements

  • No dialysis specific experience required (comprehensive on-the-job training provided)
  • Ability to function under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (e.g., OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access for patency
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (including QB, QD, UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, and monitor patient response
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and evaluations accurately on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Report significant changes or unusual findings to registered nurse or supervisor
  • Perform and document machine safety checks and interventions for unusual patient status
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures) and provide interventions
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills with appropriate disinfectant
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment
  • Actively participate in process improvement activities for patient satisfaction and QEP goals
