Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access
  • Ability to evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, including programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
  • Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Observation and machine safety check capabilities
  • Ability to handle laboratory testing, specimen preparation, blood spill cleanup, and supply/equipment management
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, cannulate, administer heparin
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD), including intradialytic interventions
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Monitor patient response, perform reinfusion vital signs, hemostasis, dressings, and pre-discharge evaluations
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and evaluations accurately and timely
  • Report significant changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks, intervene for unusual patient status, and document responses
  • Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions, obtain lab specimens
  • Clean blood spills, manage supplies/equipment to prevent wastage
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe/clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
