Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Knowledge of dialysis treatment procedures, including vital signs monitoring, blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), ultrafiltration (UF) goals, treatment time, UF modeling, safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160), and intradialytic interventions
  • Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, and patient-specific programming
  • Capability to perform patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Ability to maintain a safe and clean working environment, conduct machine safety checks, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access pre-treatment, obtain pre/post vital signs and weight
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and heparin administration as delegated
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders, including QB, QD, UF goals, treatment time, and modeling
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, monitor patient response, and document all vital signs/treatment parameters
  • Perform pre/post dialysis evaluations, obtain hemostasis, apply dressings, evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming, ensure safety alarms are enabled
  • Document treatment information accurately and timely, report significant changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks, observe patients, document interventions for unusual status
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), provide interventions, report unusual findings
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare/organize supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Participate in QEP, CQI activities, and process improvements for patient quality goals
  • Assist in maintaining safe/clean environment
