Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access
  • Ability to evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in obtaining pre/post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
  • Ability to initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD, UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Proficiency in enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits NVL 160) and conducting machine safety checks
  • Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Ability to report changes in patient condition to RN/supervisor
  • Competence in laboratory testing, specimen preparation, blood spill cleanup, and supply/equipment management
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients and inquire about wellbeing
  • Evaluate vascular access, cannulate, administer heparin, obtain pre/post vital signs/weight
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed
  • Monitor patient response, obtain vital signs pre-reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate prior to termination/discharge
  • Achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and evaluations accurately/timely
  • Document interventions for unusual patient status and responses
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment, intervene/report unusual findings
  • Obtain prescribed lab tests, prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare/organize supplies/equipment to prevent wastage
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe/clean environment and support QEP/CQI activities
