Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
  • Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Observation and intervention skills for patient response and machine safety checks
  • Ability to collect laboratory specimens and handle blood spills per facility policy
  • Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD)
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, and monitor patient response
  • Perform reinfusion functions, obtain hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and complete documentation with initial identification
  • Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN or supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks and document interventions for unusual patient status
  • Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions, and document/report findings
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing and prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills immediately with disinfectant
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on appropriate programs
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment
  • Support QEP, CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements
