The Movement Communications team is dedicated to fostering connection and collaboration within the Wikimedia movement. We aim to build bridges and understanding, ensuring people comprehend our mission and celebrate their contributions. Reporting to the Senior Movement Communications Specialist - Europe, this role will be integral to the Movement Communications team and the broader Communications Department. The specialist will focus on building bridges and shared understanding, particularly with editing communities.

We are seeking a candidate located in the European region with excellent written English and proficiency in at least one other European language, specifically German or Russian.

Responsibilities

  • Community Engagement:
    • Support building connection, trust, and understanding with online communities.
    • Monitor community channels for news, incidents, and requests, identifying key discussions.
    • Map editor communities and the Wikimedia movement in the European region, focusing on Product and Tech engagement and community needs.
    • Deepen connections with volunteer editors and affiliate groups, with a focus on Wikipedia contributors.
  • Feature Rollout:
    • Support the rollout of new features and product/technology updates.
  • Information Dissemination:
    • Inform communities about the Foundation's work, aligning with Movement Communications Insights recommendations.
  • Celebration and Appreciation:
    • Support initiatives for celebrating and appreciating contributors.
    • Identify and spotlight volunteer contributions.
    • Assist in creating human-centered stories that highlight the impact and diversity of Wikimedia volunteers.
  • Collaboration and Support:
    • Undertake occasional assignments for other organizational priorities as directed.
    • Assist with documentation, planning, meeting organization, and notetaking.

Requirements

  • Good knowledge of Wikimedia communities’ dynamics, policies, cultures, and channels.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, with a supportive attitude.
  • Well-organized, skilled in logistic tasks (scheduling, organizing, notetaking), efficient, and deadline-oriented.
  • Ability to engage and facilitate dialogue with volunteers across various formats (virtual meetings, on-wiki discussions, in-person events).
  • Wiki editing experience, including knowledge of wikitext, links, tables, images, and translation markups.
  • Extensive experience and full competence with users holding extended Wikimedia user rights (e.g., steward, admin, checkuser).
  • Experience working in a multilingual and multicultural environment.
  • Enthusiasm for Wikimedia communities and mission.
  • Excellent written English.
  • Proficiency in at least one other European language (German or Russian preferred).
