The Movement Communications team is skilled at bringing people together through celebrations and collaborative workshops, acting as strategic partners and problem solvers with other departments. The team works to build bridges and understanding within the movement, helping people comprehend the mission and celebrate their contributions.

Reporting to the Senior Movement Communications Specialist - Europe, the Movement Communications Specialist will be part of the Movement Communications team and the wider Communications Department. This role focuses on building bridges and fostering shared understanding across the movement, with a particular emphasis on editing communities. The ideal candidate will be located in the European region, possess excellent written English, and be proficient in at least one other European language, specifically German or Russian.

Responsibilities

Support building connection, trust and understanding with our online communities:

  • Monitor relevant community channels for news, incidents, and requests, identifying key discussions to understand the movement's pulse.
  • Map editor communities and the Wikimedia movement in the European region, focusing on Product and Tech engagement, and understanding community needs and priorities.
  • Scale up and deepen connections with volunteer editors and affiliate groups, with a special focus on Wikipedia contributors.
  • Support the rollout of features, products, and technology initiatives.
  • Inform communities about the Foundation's work, aligning with recommendations from Movement Communications Insights.

Celebrate:

  • Support initiatives for celebrating and appreciating contributors.
  • Identify and spotlight volunteer contributions.
  • Assist in creating human-centered stories that communicate the impact and diversity of Wikimedia volunteers.

Collaborate:

  • Support the Movement Communications team with occasional assignments for other organizational priorities as directed by the manager.
  • Assist with documentation, planning, meeting organization, and notetaking.

Requirements

  • Good knowledge of Wikimedia communities’ dynamics, policies, cultures, and channels.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, with a supportive attitude towards team efforts.
  • Well-organized with skills in handling logistic tasks (scheduling, organizing, notetaking).
  • Efficient and able to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to engage and facilitate dialogue with volunteers across various formats (virtual meetings, on-wiki discussions, in-person events).
  • Wiki editing experience, including knowledge of wikitext, internal/external links, tables, images, and translation markups.
  • Extensive experience and full competence with users holding extended Wikimedia user rights (steward, admins, checkuser, or other groups).
  • Experience working in a multilingual and multicultural environment.
  • Enthusiasm for Wikimedia communities and the Wikimedia mission.
  • Located in the European region.
  • Excellent written English.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak at least one other European language (German or Russian preferred).
