A Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) or equivalent is required, along with a minimum of 5 years of experience in technical services or library systems management, preferably in a law firm or corporate setting. The role also requires a minimum of 3 years of experience managing or leading a library or library function, strong knowledge of library technologies, integrated library systems (ILS), and digital resource management. Deep familiarity with legal research tools and databases such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, or Bloomberg Law, as well as experience managing a team and leading projects with excellent organizational and time management skills, are also necessary. Familiarity with emerging technologies and trends is essential.
The Law Library Manager will supervise and guide department staff, including training and performance evaluations, while fostering a collaborative work environment. Responsibilities include overseeing the maintenance and optimization of the integrated library system (ILS) and digital platforms, ensuring accurate cataloging, classification, and indexing, and managing the acquisition of physical and electronic resources. The role also involves overseeing the development and implementation of strategies for managing the digital collection, evaluating and recommending new technologies, and monitoring copyright compliance and licensing agreements. Additionally, the manager will manage resource costs within budget, prepare annual budgets, assist with contract negotiations, participate in the rollout and training for AI-powered legal research tools, and partner with IT to implement emerging technologies. The manager will also oversee research and intelligence activities, deliver insights to clients, maintain awareness of trends in legal research, and lead outreach specific to client needs. Finally, the role involves leading and participating in client initiatives and projects, developing project plans, setting timelines, allocating resources, and communicating project progress to stakeholders.
