Group Underwriter

Position Overview

Voya is seeking a Group Underwriter to independently underwrite complex group insurance applications. This role involves assessing risk for group insurance products, determining benefits and rates, and ensuring proper pricing and funding methods. The Group Underwriter will also provide guidance and work direction to junior underwriters and contribute to the division's profitability.

Responsibilities

  • Independently underwrite complex group insurance applications within guidelines for standard or substandard policies.
  • Approve cases up to 10,000 lives.
  • Provide guidance and work direction to lower-level group underwriters.
  • Provide input to performance reviews for junior underwriters.
  • Evaluate risk for the most complex group insurance products.
  • Analyze client data (financial condition, employee group characteristics, participation percentage, industry type, past claim experience) to determine benefits and rates.
  • Ensure proper pricing and appropriate funding methods.
  • Coordinate underwriting activities on proposals, new cases, renewals, and amendments.
  • Ensure the company can administer the client’s proposed benefit plan design and funding method.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with field personnel and clients by answering general questions and gathering information for decisions.
  • Document and communicate decisions to necessary areas within the division.
  • Review cases exceeding the underwriter's review level.
  • Contribute to total division profitability through client profitability analysis, experience and expense analysis, and attention to product line performance.
  • Participate in product development and enhancements, representing the underwriting/service team perspective.
  • Participate in regional marketing rollouts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Knowledge & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 1-2 years of underwriting experience in group voluntary benefits
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Proficiency in Excel
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Knowledge & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

Compensation

Voya is committed to pay that’s fair and equitable, offering comparable pay for comparable roles and responsibilities. The annual base salary range reflects the expected hiring range for this position. In addition to base salary, Voya offers incentive opportunities (i.e., annual cash incentives, sales incentives, and/or long-term incentives) based on the role to reward the achievement of annual performance objectives.
