About the Marketplace Team: The Marketplace team at Thumbtack focuses on building a high-quality, two-sided marketplace that provides delightful hiring experiences for customers and fosters a healthy ecosystem for service professionals. This involves enhancing the end-to-end search and hiring process, which includes:

  • Enabling customers to discover services.
  • Allowing customers to describe their needs conversationally.
  • Understanding search queries and scoping problems.
  • Optimizing algorithms for professional ranking.
  • Facilitating customer comparison and selection of relevant professionals.
  • Building personalized recommendations.
  • Evolving and scaling the marketplace infrastructure.

The team is structured into cross-functional product teams (pods), each responsible for specific problems and infrastructure. These pods typically include an engineering manager, product manager, software engineers, designers, and applied/data scientists.

About the Role: Thumbtack is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead one of the cross-functional product teams within the Marketplace organization. This role involves partnering with the Product Manager to shape technical and product strategy, define OKRs, and drive execution. The Engineering Manager will also be responsible for coaching and managing a full-stack engineering team (backend, front end, iOS, Android). This is a high-impact, high-visibility position due to the Marketplace team's significant contribution to Thumbtack's revenue growth. Success requires strong collaboration with product, design, applied science, and data science counterparts.

Responsibilities

  • Define and evolve the technical vision and strategy for the team.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional partners (product, design, applied science, data science) on strategy and execution.
  • Drive team execution against team-specific OKRs.
  • Provide strong technical leadership, guiding complex technical decisions.
  • Hire, coach, and manage full-stack engineers at all levels, including Staff+ engineers.
  • Foster a high-performing culture of excellence within the team.
  • Maintain and scale the team's owned infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with other engineering leaders to improve Thumbtack's engineering culture in a fast-paced growth environment.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience in an engineering management role.
  • 5+ years of experience building software at scale.
  • Strong technical skills.
