The Marketplace team at Thumbtack is responsible for building and enhancing a two-sided marketplace that provides delightful hiring experiences for customers and maximizes value for professionals. This involves improving the end-to-end search and hiring process, from service discovery and problem expression to professional ranking, comparison, and personalized recommendations. The team operates in cross-functional product teams (pods), each focused on specific challenges and infrastructure, typically comprising an engineering manager, product manager, software engineers, designers, and scientists.

About the Role

Thumbtack is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead one of the cross-functional product teams within the Marketplace organization. This role involves partnering with a Product Manager to shape technical and product strategy, drive execution against OKRs, and manage a team of full-stack engineers (backend, front end, iOS, Android). As the Marketplace team significantly contributes to Thumbtack's revenue growth, this is a high-impact, high-visibility position requiring strong collaboration with product, design, applied science, and data science counterparts.

Responsibilities

  • Define and evolve the technical vision and strategy for the team.
  • Collaborate effectively with product, design, applied science, and data science on strategy and execution.
  • Drive team execution against team-specific OKRs.
  • Provide technical leadership, guiding complex technical decisions.
  • Hire, coach, and manage full-stack engineers at all levels, including Staff+ engineers.
  • Foster a high-performing culture of excellence within the team.
  • Maintain and scale the team's owned infrastructure.
  • Work with other engineering leaders to improve Thumbtack's engineering culture in a fast-paced growth environment.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience in an engineering management role.
  • 5+ years of experience building software at scale.
  • Strong technical skills.
