Engineering Manager (DOM or SpiderMonkey)

Why Mozilla?

Mozilla Corporation is a non-profit-backed technology company dedicated to shaping the internet for the better. For over 25 years, we have pioneered brands like Firefox, the privacy-minded web browser. With over 225 million monthly users globally, we are committed to reclaiming an internet built for people, not companies. Our work spans diverse areas including AI, social media, and security, all while staying true to our core mission.

Mozilla Corporation is wholly owned by the Mozilla Foundation, a non-profit 501(c) organization. This unique structure means we are not beholden to shareholders, but solely to our mission. We collaborate with thousands of volunteer contributors worldwide to design, build, and distribute open-source software that empowers individuals to experience the internet on their own terms.

About this Team and Role

Are you passionate about web technologies and the applications that enhance users' lives? Do you thrive on helping engineers excel and grow in their careers?

We are hiring for two Engineering Manager positions:

  • Engineering Manager for the DOM team: Responsible for the Gecko implementation of web standards such as Storage, File System, Web Workers, Push API, and Notifications API, which power websites used via Firefox.
  • Engineering Manager for the SpiderMonkey JavaScript team: Responsible for Mozilla's JavaScript engine and JavaScript standards (TC39), which drive the web experiences for Firefox users.

Both teams are geographically distributed, with some members located in the Mozilla Berlin office. Working virtually and in the open is our standard practice.

What You'll Do:

  • Manage a team of software engineers working on storage, background, and system-level Web APIs and standards, or the SpiderMonkey JavaScript engine and related standards.
  • Mentor and guide a diverse team of engineers, fostering collaboration, supporting career growth, and demonstrating empathy for their needs.
  • Own the team roadmap, collaborating closely with platform peer managers, product management, and technical leads to manage risks, balance resources, and clear blockers.
  • Assign work to team members based on their abilities, while working with the team to deliver major initiatives on clear timelines.
  • Ensure the team delivers well-planned, high-quality, and maintainable software.
  • Collaborate openly with the open-source community.

What You'll Bring:

  • 2+ years of hands-on people management experience.
  • Experienced functional manager with proven skills leading diverse engineering teams, capable of mentoring team members with skill sets different from your own.
  • Proven project management skills to lead the team in delivering and maintaining complex software projects.
  • Software engineering background to drive technical decisions, engage with engineers at all seniority levels, and empower tech leads as primary designers and decision-makers.
  • Proficiency with software development lifecycle practices for triage, prioritization, and execution.
  • Passion for problem-solving, risk management, leading change, and facilitating collaborative decision-making.
  • Commitment to our values:
    • Welcoming differences
    • Being relationship-minded
    • Practicing responsible participation
    • Having grit

What You'll Get:

  • Generous performance-based bonus plans for all eligible employees.
  • Rich medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Generous retirement contributions with 100% immediate vesting.
  • Quarterly all-company wellness days.
  • Country-specific holidays plus a day off for your birthday.
  • One-time home office stipend.
  • Annual professional development budget.
