Requirements

  • Keen understanding of American politics, elections, and voting patterns in past and upcoming elections
  • Technical and statistical skills
  • Skilled at harnessing and making sense of available data and explaining it to others
  • Experienced writer
  • Experienced statistician
  • Experienced R developer (or a plan to grow in this area if lacking)
  • Ability to develop opinions on how counties or demographic groups are likely to vote in upcoming elections (or excitement to do so)
  • Preparedness to work irregular hours in a high-pressure environment
  • Ability to work in a hybrid position with regular office attendance (New York preferred, Washington, D.C. considered)

Responsibilities

  • Build and shape statistical models that estimate turnout and vote choice of individuals, geographic units, demographic and political groups, and the overall electorate
  • Help maintain the voter registration files that underpin Times/Siena polling and election night forecasts
  • Work on the design and weighting of political surveys, including The New York Times/Siena College Poll
  • Help build and expand polling averages
  • Contribute original analyses of polls, voter registration trends, and recent election results for articles or graphics
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of journalistic independence and commitment to the mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
