Candidates should possess strong programming skills in languages such as Go, Java, or Python, with a focus on reading, debugging, and evolving existing code. A solid understanding of systems internals, including filesystems, memory management, network stacks, and kernel behavior is required. Hands-on experience running Kubernetes in production, a deep understanding of containers and modern cloud-native workflows, and demonstrated experience with at least one major public cloud provider (AWS, GCP, or Azure) are essential. A strong bias for automation and reproducibility, comfort with Kubernetes, GitOps, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, and observability tools, and confidence in diagnosing complex systems are also necessary. Exceptional teamwork, collaboration skills, the ability to work independently as part of a globally distributed team, and solid written and verbal communication skills are expected.
The Backend Software Engineer will design, build, and evolve internal infrastructure services, often as Kubernetes operators, that power the core Confluent Cloud platform. They will own the systems that make cloud infrastructure secure, scalable, observable, and reliable, utilizing GitOps, Terraform, Prometheus, Grafana, and a strong foundation in Linux, networking, and public cloud. Responsibilities include collaborating with engineers to enable fast, safe, and autonomous deployment of services through shared platform tooling and best practices, and taking shared responsibility for the full lifecycle of infrastructure, including availability, performance, monitoring, incident response, and capacity planning. The role involves working on systems at scale, influencing architecture and operational strategy, and participating in a 12-hour, follow-the-sun on-call rotation.
