Requirements

  • Entry-level position with ability to assist technicians and engineers in hands-on fabrication and testing of hardware
  • Ability to develop and demonstrate general fabrication skills: machining (milling, lathe, drilling, tapping, fly cutting, grinding, installing hardware like heli-coils/threaded inserts) on aluminum, copper, steel
  • Ability to solder components using torch, hot plate, or oven, understanding flux and solder processes for aluminum and copper
  • Ability to braze components using torch or furnace, selecting appropriate process
  • Understanding of welding processes and weld design; occasional welding by technician
  • Ability to leak check hardware using helium mass spectrometer (vacuum, sniffing, bagged modes)
  • Minor electrical skills: wiring heaters, solder fixtures, setting up variacs, watt-meters, measuring current/resistance for power calculation
  • Perform all skills safely to prevent injury
  • Ability to fabricate hardware and prototypes per instructions or engineering drawings, meeting requirements with craftsman-like appearance
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings per GD&T standards (ANSI/ASME Y14.5M-1994), attention to tolerances and finishes
  • Learn and follow ISO 9001 and AS9100 quality standards; document work (FAI, travelers, C of C, project folders)
  • Complete and deliver work on time to internal/external customers
  • Maintain clean, organized work area and lab; return tools, dispose/store materials

Responsibilities

  • Assist technicians and engineers with hands-on fabrication and testing in the laboratory
  • Work with assigned mentor to learn equipment use and achieve independent operation
  • Develop and apply fabrication skills (machining, soldering, brazing, welding understanding, leak checking, electrical work)
  • Assemble hardware and prototypes per instructions/drawings
  • Interpret engineering drawings using GD&T
  • Follow quality standards (ISO 9001, AS9100), perform documentation (FAI, travelers, C of C)
  • Ensure on-time delivery of work
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of work area and lab
  • Set up and conduct laboratory tests on units/components per plans, procedures, specifications
  • Analyze test data, record results in notebook/database, report on performance vs. specifications
  • Provide recommendations for test method changes based on results
  • Perform other duties as assigned
