Requirements

  • Functions as part of the Inpatient Services Hemodialysis Health Care team
  • Provides patient care under the direct supervision of Hemodialysis Registered Nurse (excluding Intensive Care Units)
  • Documented competency and proficiency to set up and prime equipment for renal replacement therapies (hemodialysis, continuous renal replacement, peritoneal dialysis)
  • Ability to calculate and enter dialysis machine programming (Ultrafiltration goal, treatment time, Sodium modeling, UF modeling)
  • Knowledge of manufacturer instructions for use, company policies, procedures, and compliance with state/federal regulations
  • Physical ability to perform essential functions, including handling physical demands of day-to-day work in a dialysis suite environment

Responsibilities

  • Report and document all new/unusual incidents, information, complaints, or problems to the RN
  • Promote and assist in maintaining a safe and clean working environment
  • Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAI) activities, and process improvements for patient satisfaction and FKC Quality Enhancement Goals
  • Assure dialysis machine is set up, tested, and safe per manufacturer instructions and company policy
  • Welcome assigned patients, inquire about well-being, and report complaints/observations to RN
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weight; report unusual findings to RN
  • Report difficulties in cannulation or unusual findings to RN (as permitted by state requirements)
  • Accurately document patient treatment information in individual patient record, hospital EMS, and Acute Care Electronic System (ACES)
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled (e.g., narrow venous limits NVL 160)
  • Collect, label specimens, and ensure timely delivery to laboratory per facility policy
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, provide interventions as prescribed by physician or directed by RN, monitor response to therapy, and report unusual findings
  • Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion, perform functions for treatment discontinuation, and document
  • Evaluate patient prior to termination of venous access (standing/sitting blood pressures), obtain hemostasis, apply dressings, evaluate prior to discharge, and report unusual findings to RN
  • Review and comply with Code of Business Conduct, company policies, and local/state/federal laws/regulations
  • Assist with various projects as assigned by direct supervisor or supervising RN
  • Perform other duties as assigned
