Candidates must possess an active, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in their state of residence, with a minimum of 5 years of nursing experience and at least 1 year of utilization management experience in concurrent review or prior authorization. An Associate's degree in nursing is required, with a BSN preferred, and proficiency with phone systems, clinical documentation tools, and navigating multiple digital platforms is essential. Strong decision-making skills and clinical judgment are necessary, along with a commitment to attend a mandatory 3-week training with 100% participation. Experience in a managed care organization or a high-volume clinical call center/remote environment is preferred.
The Utilization Management Nurse Consultant will apply critical thinking and evidence-based clinical criteria to evaluate services requiring precertification, conducting clinical reviews via phone and electronic documentation. They will collaborate with healthcare providers to gather necessary information, use established guidelines to authorize services or escalate to Medical Directors, and navigate multiple computer systems efficiently while maintaining accurate documentation. The role requires thriving in a fast-paced, high-volume environment with strong organizational, multitasking, and prioritization skills, performing sedentary work that primarily involves extended periods of sitting. Flexibility to provide coverage for other UM Nurses across various UM specialty teams and participate in occasional on-call rotations, including some weekends and holidays, is expected.
