Requirements

  • Licensed in RI (MA licensure is a plus)
  • Admission to Federal court (a plus)
  • Litigation experience in handling the defense of Bodily Injury Auto, Bodily Injury Commercial, Bodily Injury Homeowners, Commercial Auto, Commercial Property, Complex Commercial, Premises Liability, Products Liability, Property Damage, Uninsured & Underinsured Motorist claims (preferred)
  • Moderate civil litigation experience in property and casualty insurance defense or subrogation
  • Academic credentials, strong analytical skills, and legal acumen for successful litigation work
  • Requisite trial advocacy skills
  • Subject matter expertise and trial advocacy skills for property and casualty insurance defense or subrogation trial practice (or ability and willingness to develop them)
  • Ability to maintain a highly productive case volume with innovative thinking, effective collaboration, embracing technology, and a highly organized and proactive approach to case management

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate trial advocacy skills independently as lead counsel or as part of a team, with productivity, proactive case management, work ethic, and work product quality in accordance with Nationwide Trial Division (NTD) standard methodology guidelines, claims, and client expectations
  • Operate with low to moderate managerial oversight and guidance from the Managing Trial Attorney and NTD Leadership in all aspects of core duties and job responsibilities
  • Effectively utilize technology and collaboratively work with support staff to ensure efficient case management and productivity
  • Demonstrate consistent awareness of changes to the law, technology, local rules, procedural requirements, or other aspects of the legal and insurance industries impacting liability and recovery litigation strategies in assigned jurisdictions
  • Represent clients under commercial and personal lines insurance policies as lead counsel with moderate to low guidance and oversight, or as part of a larger team as needed, handling a mix of low to moderate complexity, severity, product lines, and specialized concentrations throughout all courts and agencies in assigned jurisdiction(s)
  • Provide factually, legally, and analytically sound opinions on case valuations that are promptly updated and timely communicated to the client and claims
  • Recognize and use opportunities to establish and foster professional relationships within Office of the Chief Legal Officer and claims at the claims manager level
