Job Description: Comment Moderator (Temporary)

Salary: $72,143.33 - $73,000 USD (Annual Base Pay Range)

Location Type: Remote (Employees in New York are encouraged to work with the team in NYC headquarters)

Employment Type: Temporary (up to six months with possibility of extension), Full-time (35 hours/week) or Part-time


Position Overview

The New York Times Community team is seeking several Comment Moderators to join on a temporary basis. This role involves reviewing, approving, and curating reader comments in a fast-paced environment, contributing to The Times's reputation for thoughtful and robust comment sections. Moderators will help facilitate informed and thoughtful debate among readers on important global news.


Responsibilities

  • Moderate comments according to NYT guidelines, ensuring a high-quality user experience.
  • Nominate comments for highlighting as NYT Picks.
  • Assist reporters and editors with replies to reader comments, identifying opportunities for journalists to engage with reader questions.
  • Share insights on comment trends with the Community team, Audience team, and specific desks in the newsroom and Opinion section.
  • Flag errors identified by readers to Community editors and relevant desk editors.
  • Track work using team tools such as Slack, Google Sheets, and Google Docs.
  • Perform related work as assigned.
  • Demonstrate support for journalistic independence and commitment to The Times's mission: "to seek the truth and help people understand the world."

Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of Journalism experience.
  • Demonstrated interest in community building.
  • Demonstrated news judgment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with online discussion groups as a moderator, manager, or contributor.
  • A willingness to help shape The Times's roadmap for building communities within its comments sections.
