Requirements

Certified Substance Abuse Counselor
Compassionate and enthusiastic with a desire to teach, learn, and join a therapeutic community
Ability to work in a residential prison program setting with inmate population (substance abuse students)
Supervised by a certified behavioral health professional
Maintains individual continued learning towards community building and teaching skills
Attends in-service, training workshops, and conferences

Responsibilities

Leads and participates in group, individual, and therapeutic processes
Participates with students in determining short and long-range goals and treatment plans
Conducts welcoming and thorough intake interviews to ensure students’ basic necessities are met
Provides additional support in special circumstances (e.g., quarantine)
Serves as a student advocate by providing a hospitable social environment and remaining educated on students’ individual stories
Compiles, evaluates comprehensive social, legal, and personal histories of students
Interacts with student’s family, attorney, probation/parole officer, and other significant individuals or agencies
Observes, records, and evaluates changes in students' appearance, behavior, and demeanor; maintains accurate and timely student records
Evaluates emergencies and takes appropriate action
Learns, maintains, and restores Amity’s standard for physical environments; creates a well-organized, culturally diverse, aesthetically pleasing, and clean community environment
Follows up with students’ daily community living progress; ensures provision of personal necessities and teaches maintenance of clean living environments
Prepares daily, weekly, and monthly engaging student activities
Develops and maintains skills in preparing, setting up, and hosting community seminars, gatherings, ceremonies
Collaborates with the community to define it, acknowledge accomplishments and special events, and teach vision and values
Learns how to support and conduct community ceremonies properly
Prepares reporting and documentation as required by Amity and contract compliance
Protects students’ health, safety, welfare, and confidentiality of records
Provides training and guidance to students, demonstrating good work habits
Assists in the supervision of interns and volunteers
Participates in community building activities, faculty staffing, and other required activities
Performs other related duties as assigned
