Candidates should possess a total of 8+ years of experience as a software engineer, proficiency in designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale utilizing technologies such as Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes, and expertise in developing web applications with declarative UI frameworks like React or Vue. They should also be proficient in ensuring high availability (HA) and resilience of critical services through runbooks, incident response strategies, and post-mortem analysis, and have experience defining a technical plan for the delivery of a significant feature or system component with an elegant, simple, and extensible design. Furthermore, they must be able to automate operational tasks, deployments, failover processes, and scaling strategies, and demonstrate experience delivering major features, system components, or deprecating existing functionality through a technical and execution plan.
The Staff Software Engineer will be responsible for setting technical strategy for their team on a year-long time scale, collaborating across teams in the product development lifecycle, acting as a force-multiplier for their team through technical solutions and operational processes, taking ownership of their team’s operations and availability by ensuring appropriate monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, and alerting are in place, fostering a culture of quality and ownership through code review standards and advocating for them, and helping develop talent on their team by providing feedback and guidance. They will also partner with Observability and Reliability teams to proactively detect and mitigate potential outages, and collaborate closely with Storage & Replication, Cloud, CI/CD, and Security teams to ensure Affirm’s infrastructure meets high operational standards.
