About Arcadia

Arcadia is dedicated to happier, healthier days for all. We transform diverse data into a unified fabric for health. Our platform delivers actionable insights for our customers to advance care and research, drive strategic growth, and achieve financial success. For more information, visit arcadia.io.

Why This Role Is Important to Arcadia

Arcadia’s Data Gateway team is the front door through which raw clinical and administrative data flows into our platform. As we expand into real-time and longitudinal use cases, we need a seasoned engineer to elevate our FHIR-based ingestion and transformation engine to the next level of scale, reliability, and compliance. You will shape the technical direction of the Data Gateway, ensuring our customers can exchange data using the latest FHIR standards—securely, efficiently, and at scale.

What Success Looks Like

  • In 3 months:
    • Understand Arcadia’s FHIR data ingestion architecture and tech stack
    • Contribute enhancements to our Java-based pipeline components
    • Participate in design and code reviews across the Gateway team
  • In 6 months:
    • Own key FHIR-based integration services and SLAs
    • Implement scalable improvements to data validation and compliance workflows
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to roll out new FHIR data partnerships
  • In 12 months:
    • Lead large-scale architectural upgrades tied to emerging FHIR standards (e.g., R5, TEFCA)
    • Mentor engineers across the org on FHIR best practices and distributed data pipelines
    • Represent Arcadia in technical discussions with healthcare integration partners

What You'll Be Doing

  • Design & Build FHIR Integrations: Develop and maintain robust data pipelines that ingest, validate, and transform FHIR resources into assets powering the Arcadia platform.
  • Architect Distributed Solutions: Leverage Java, Kafka, Spark, and Kubernetes to build scalable, cloud-native services.
  • Champion Data Quality & Compliance: Embed security (HIPAA), privacy, and data lineage into every integration layer.
  • Optimize & Troubleshoot: Continuously improve throughput, latency, and cost across batch and real-time workflows.
  • Mentor & Collaborate: Guide peers and partner with product, architecture, DevOps, and analytics teams.
  • Influence Standards: Stay current on evolving specs (US Core, Bulk FHIR, TEFCA) and help drive internal adoption.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years in professional software engineering
  • 2+ years in healthcare data integrations with strong hands-on FHIR expertise
  • Deep experience with Java and distributed systems (e.g., Spark, Kafka)
  • Analytical, detail-oriented, and comfortable navigating ambiguity
  • Collaborative with strong technical communication skills
  • Technical Skills:
    • FHIR (US Core, R4/R5, SMART on FHIR)
    • REST APIs, HL7 v2, CDA, and Kafka
    • Performance tuning and debugging distributed systems
    • Cloud services (AWS preferred), Docker, Kubernetes

Would Love For You To Have

  • Experience with EHR integrations (e.g., Epic, Cerner) and/or Claims integrations (BCDA, Bulk FHIR, CCLF, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Hudi, Delta Lake, Iceberg, or similar
  • Hands-on with Argo, GitHub Actions, and Terraform

What You'll Get

  • Work on a mission-driven team shaping how the healthcare industry accesses and uses data
  • Opportunity to lead critical architectural initiatives that impact millions of patient records
  • A flexible, remote-friendly environment with heart and purpose
  • Participation in Arcadian and Barkadian employee programs
  • Access to personal and professional development resources
