Position Summary

Nava's Principal Software Engineer (FHIR) is an expert in HL7 FHIR and related standards, acting as a crucial link between Nava, technical experts, external developers, and clients. In this role as an architect, strategist, consultant, and translator, your primary mission is to drive the overall strategy and architecture for FHIR-based software services within major federal agencies.

You will be a dynamic, technically-oriented individual with an innate ability to delve deep into technology, identify areas for improvement, and assist the end-user community in understanding and adopting our clients’ technologies. You will be adept at engaging with customers, gathering their feedback, and translating that feedback into actionable insights for the project team. Your responsibilities will include collaborating with clients to shape product roadmaps, providing subject matter expertise for issue investigation, training engineers, and driving the overall technical direction within the organization.

What You'll Do

  • Collaborate with software engineers to foster understanding of FHIR objects and relationships, the standards landscape, and implementation considerations related to claims data.
  • Craft long-term strategic roadmaps for FHIR conformance and overall standards development.
  • Actively participate in HL7 and related standards bodies.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the developer user space and their current and future needs.
  • Prototype new features, tools, and other innovations.
  • Work closely with product, design, and engineering teams to share developer user needs, ensuring this deeply informs project direction.
  • Review, improve, and write user documentation, product and technical plans, and software with a focus on user needs.
  • Undertake software engineering tasks on an as-needed basis, including building new features or debugging user issues.

Required Skills

  • Current and/or prior experience developing API endpoints with Kotlin, Java, Python, Ruby, or similar languages.
  • At least 6 years of experience working in an agile, multidisciplinary team environment, preferably designing and building medium to large-scale web applications on Cloud Platforms.
  • Strong experience in the healthcare industry, with a deep understanding of HL7/FHIR.
  • Experience utilizing Smart on FHIR standards to build healthcare applications.
  • Tenacity to dive into problems and iterate with working code.
  • A blend of systems thinking, software engineering expertise, and evangelism.
  • Highly resourceful, reliable, and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to think strategically about trade-offs and short-term vs. long-term benefits.
  • An adaptive, empathetic, collaborative, and positive mindset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical communication.
