Flock Safety is seeking an experienced and skilled Staff Rails Engineer with deep knowledge of Ruby, Rails, and PostgreSQL. This role requires an individual who excels both independently and as part of a team, acting as a "manager of one." Responsibilities include architecture, backend Ruby programming, and optimizing PostgreSQL database integrity and performance, especially in environments where Rails is not the sole client. As a fully remote team, excellent written and asynchronous communication skills are essential. This leadership position offers the chance to collaborate with cross-functional teams, mentor engineers, and drive product innovation.

The ideal candidate will have experience with framework-level development, including a strong understanding of Rails internals and techniques for scaling Rails applications, particularly those requiring high performance and reliability.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of PostgreSQL experience (querying and schema architecture)
  • 8+ years of database architecture experience
  • 12+ years of Rails development experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team ("manager of one")
  • Experience with framework-level development, including knowledge of Rails internals
  • Experience with techniques for scaling Rails applications
  • Experience with Rails applications demanding high performance or reliability
  • Experience with Rails applications where the database serves multiple clients
