Requirements

Candidates must have 6-8+ years of backend software engineering experience, including designing, building, and operating production systems at scale. Strong proficiency in at least one backend language commonly used for mobile backends (e.g., Python, Node.js, Ruby) is required, along with experience designing and implementing APIs (REST and/or GraphQL) to support mobile applications. Hands-on experience integrating with large language models (via OpenAI, Anthropic, Amazon Bedrock, or custom-hosted models) and strong knowledge of distributed systems fundamentals (scalability, caching, performance optimization, reliability, observability) are also necessary. A degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience is preferred, as is familiarity with data-intensive systems or workflows, modern infrastructure and tooling (CI/CD, cloud platforms, observability), and comfort participating in on-call rotations.

Responsibilities

The Senior Software Engineer will take a leading role in shaping the backend for Rula’s next generation of AI-enabled mental health products. They will design and deliver scalable systems in TypeScript and Node.js that power new mobile and patient-facing experiences, including AI-driven capabilities. The engineer will collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and mobile engineers, mentor junior teammates, and influence how the technology scales. This role involves troubleshooting production issues and contributing to team reliability practices.
