Sr. Backend Engineer

Position Overview

• Location Type: Remote (Preference for CA, specifically SF Bay Area or LA/Long Beach)
• Job Type: Full-Time
• Salary: $200K - $245K

Parkade is revolutionizing parking in private buildings, aiming to make every parking spot accessible via a mobile app. We have a strong customer and investor base, having recently closed our Series A, and are now focused on expanding our reach across the US. We are seeking a skilled and entrepreneurial backend engineer to contribute to our growth by enhancing our server, mobile/web endpoints, payment processing, pricing, and new-building rollout tools. You will report to the CTO and collaborate closely with the engineering team, Product, Design, and Customer Support.

Responsibilities

• Build and scale the Parkade server and API using Python, which supports the mobile and web applications.
• Make a significant impact on how features and systems are developed.
• Collaborate with the team to build a high-quality product, both internally and externally.
• Monitor and respond to error logs, alerts, and operational feedback to improve system reliability and prevent recurring issues.
• Proactively identify opportunities to reduce complexity, prevent bugs, and build maintainable systems that handle failures gracefully.
• Ensure the backend is built for high reliability, observability, and debuggability.
• Contribute to a company culture that prioritizes sustained productivity over excessive work hours.

Requirements

• 6+ years of backend engineering experience at tech companies.
• Strong proficiency (3+ years) in Python, including a deep understanding of the language, runtime, and best practices.
• Familiarity with SQL databases and Python ORMs. Experience with Postgres and SQLAlchemy is a plus.
• Proven experience maintaining large codebases with multiple contributors, demonstrating the ability to make sound design decisions informed by past experiences.
• Ability to develop necessary infrastructure for deployments, continuous integration, production hosting, and developer environments.
• Experience in filling specification gaps and proposing preferred design and product solutions.

Bonus Qualifications

• More extensive engineering experience (the team averages 12+ years).
• Passion for solving problems related to parking and the efficient use of urban space and resources.
• Team Lead or management experience, or a strong desire for leadership growth.
• Experience writing frontend code with React or React Native.
• Located in or willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area, with an interest in spending time at the SF-Mission office several days a week.
