Software Engineer II - Merchant Engineering

Position Overview

We are seeking a Software Engineer II to develop financial products and features that provide enhanced accessibility and flexibility to our users. In this role, you will be responsible for architecting, designing, and implementing new API and microservice interfaces to manage merchant lifecycles, analytics, data, and interactions with Affirm. You will also apply your technical expertise to identify opportunities for improving the performance and reliability of systems critical to the user's purchasing journey with Affirm.

Responsibilities

  • Define technical strategy for broad or complex requirements, employing insightful and forward-looking approaches that extend beyond the immediate team and address large, open-ended challenges.
  • Participate in the strategic development of methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for projects and programs.
  • Take ownership of the merchant data platform, defining its long-term health and improving the health of surrounding systems.
  • Collaborate effectively with engineers within our team and across the organization.
  • Contribute to the improvement of engineering standards, tooling, and processes throughout the organization.

Requirements

  • 2-4+ years of experience as a software engineer.
  • Proven track record of developing, testing, and shipping high-quality software at scale.
  • Prior experience with monitoring and alerting systems (e.g., Sentry.io, Rollbar, Chronosphere, Kibana).
  • Experience building APIs with Python or Kotlin is a plus.
  • Experience with MySQL or Elasticsearch is a plus.
  • Experience building thoughtfully designed, highly performant interfaces.
  • Product-centric thinking: A strong focus on the product experience for users, stakeholders, and the company, alongside the design of engineering systems.
  • Enjoy leading technical architecture discussions and driving technical decisions within your team and beyond.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills, with a tendency towards over-communication.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Pay Grade: L
  • Equity Grade: 5
  • CAN Base Pay Range: $125,000 - $175,000 per year
  • Employees new to Affirm typically start at the beginning of the pay range. Affirm provides a simple and transparent pay structure based on factors like location, experience, and job-related skills.
  • Total Compensation Package: May include monthly stipends for health, wellness, and tech spending, and benefits.
