Salary Range: $92,000 - $156,000 (The exact salary will be dependent on the successful candidate’s location, relevant knowledge, skills, and qualifications.)


Position Overview

BigCommerce is seeking a Backend Software Engineer II with Go expertise to join a small, highly collaborative team focused on building and evolving the hosting infrastructure for Catalyst, BigCommerce's next-generation storefront technology. Catalyst is built on Next.js, aiming to deliver exceptional performance and flexibility for merchants by leveraging the latest web development technologies and best practices. This role involves working across Next.js, developer tooling, and hosting infrastructure to enable scalable, secure, and performant storefront experiences.


Who You Are

  • Technical Expertise:
    • Experience building backend services in Go.
    • Understanding of distributed systems, HTTP infrastructure, and CI/CD workflows.
    • Familiarity with cloud platforms or edge compute (e.g., Cloudflare Workers, Lambda, Vercel).
    • Ability to design clear, composable APIs that are easy to maintain and evolve.
    • Strong debugging skills and experience monitoring and operating services in production.
  • Collaboration & Communication:
    • Clear communication with both technical and non-technical collaborators.
    • Proactive in seeking feedback, asking thoughtful questions, and reflecting on team practices.
  • Education:
    • Preferred: Minimum Bachelor's degree in CS, EE, SW, CE, MIS, or equivalent experience.
    • Alternatively, completion of a comprehensive software engineering boot camp.

What You’ll Do

  • Infrastructure Development: Design and build backend services to enable the deployment of scalable, secure, and performant storefront experiences.
  • Collaboration: Work with internal stakeholders across BigCommerce and Makeswift teams to integrate hosting with developer and merchant tooling.
  • Innovation: Explore edge compute platforms and distributed systems patterns to deliver resilient, multi-tenant infrastructure.
  • Code Quality: Write clear, maintainable, and well-tested Go code, prioritizing reliability and scalability.
  • Team Contribution: Participate in code reviews, team discussions, and documentation to ensure alignment and knowledge sharing.
  • Support Diverse Use Cases: Support a range of use cases, from developer-driven workflows to fully managed, no-code deployments.

  • GitHub Actions or other CI/CD tooling
