Pan-American Life Insurance Group (PALIG) is seeking a Senior Underwriter responsible for the review, evaluation, and classification of risk for life insurance applications in accordance with established underwriting guidelines up to their given authority approval. The Senior Underwriter will also be responsible for reviewing complex cases, higher face amounts, and requiring regular collaboration with other members of the underwriting team, the Medical Director, the reinsurance department, and sales partners. They will process applications and underwriting requirements in a timely, efficient, and cost-conscious manner and effectively communicate underwriting decisions to internal and external sales partners.

Essential Functions

Underwrite Applications for Life Insurance

  • Review life insurance applications and supporting documents, including medical histories, lifestyle information, financial status, and occupational risks.
  • Provide consistent, timely, and competitive decisions consistent with the company's underwriting philosophy and guidelines.
  • Appraise and underwrite complex risks for life insurance, ensuring underwriting decisions are sound, competitive, and profitable.
  • Maintain detailed records of underwriting decisions and rationale in underwriting systems and ensure compliance with industry and regulatory standards.
  • Show initiative in daily tasks and in assisting the underwriting team, requiring little to no direction to be productive.
  • Underwrite a fluctuating level of applications in a timely manner.

Maintain Relationships

  • Establish and maintain a positive collaborative relationship with sales partners, vendors, and other departments through sensitive, flexible, and responsive handling of questions and concerns relating to underwriting.
  • Effectively communicate difficult decisions with agents while maintaining their trust and confidence.

Coordinate with Other Company Departments

  • Contribute to successful company operations by effectively coordinating with other departments, such as underwriting, new business, claims, and sales.
  • Continually look for ways to improve processes and be willing to lead and execute department or functional projects.
  • Assist and promote maintenance of department expense control.

Maintain Current Knowledge of Underwriting Principles

  • Demonstrate commitment to career development by actively participating in training opportunities and independent industry programs to ensure industry knowledge is current and maintained.
  • Keep appraised of new developments in the field of life underwriting and product development.
  • Follow all department policies, procedures, and processes to maintain or improve quality standards, and assist with quality monitoring and audits as needed.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, plus 5 years of experience in individual life underwriting (4 additional years of work experience may be substituted in lieu of degree).
  • Prior experience with a $1,000,000 approval authority.
  • Experience with and working knowledge of underwriting computer systems.
  • FLMI and/or AALU designation(s) or similar industry coursework.
  • 10 years of experience in individual life underwriting preferred.
  • Prior experience with a $2,000,000 approval authority and EKG approval authority preferred.
  • FLMI and/or FALU designation(s) preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products and an imaged work environment.
  • Knowledge of life insurance, risk selection, and medical terminology, diseases, and conditions.
  • Knowledge of sound claim principles.
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities.

  • Proven record of strong customer service and teamwork.
  • Strong negotiation and consultative skills.
