About the Role: Senior Software Engineer, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE)

As a Senior Software Engineer, SRE at Spreedly, you will be instrumental in enhancing the reliability, performance, and scalability of our globally distributed payments platform. Your focus will be on the application layer, working closely with product and platform engineers to implement robust monitoring, resolve performance issues, and improve system resiliency. This is a high-leverage technical role with significant visibility across the engineering department.

Responsibilities

  • Application Observability & Monitoring: Design, implement, and refine observability systems using tools like Datadog, OpenTelemetry, and others to proactively identify and resolve system issues.
  • Incident Management: Lead root cause analysis, incident resolution, and participate in the on-call rotation (approximately every 10–12 weeks), with a strong emphasis on prevention and measurable reliability improvements.
  • Performance Engineering: Diagnose and resolve application-level bottlenecks within Ruby on Rails and Elixir codebases, and collaborate with engineering teams to define and achieve Service Level Indicators (SLIs) and Service Level Objectives (SLOs).
  • Database Optimization: Identify and address inefficiencies in queries and indexing for PostgreSQL and CockroachDB.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Act as a reliability partner to product and infrastructure teams, providing guidance on reliability principles and embedding SRE best practices.
  • Tooling & Automation: Develop developer tools to automate deployment, monitoring, and diagnostics across production systems.

Requirements

  • Experience: 5+ years in SRE or related software engineering roles, with proven experience supporting production services at scale.
  • Programming Proficiency: Expertise in a modern programming language; experience with Ruby, Rails, and Elixir is preferred.
  • Observability Tooling: Hands-on experience with observability tools such as Datadog, OpenTelemetry, Sentry, etc.
  • Cloud Experience: Experience with AWS services including EC2 (Ubuntu Linux), S3, and RDS.
  • Database Knowledge: Understanding of relational databases (e.g., CockroachDB, PostgreSQL, Riak), including experience with performance optimization and query tuning. Experience with Kafka is considered a plus.
  • Incident Response: Experience supporting incident response and conducting postmortems in high-stakes environments.
  • SLI/SLO Development: Prior experience developing and improving SLIs/SLOs.
