Employment Type: Full-time

Position Overview

Tempus is seeking a high-performing and experienced Senior Medical Science Liaison (Sr. MSL) to support the commercial, research, and educational objectives of the company. This field-based role requires a strong clinical and scientific background in oncology, genomic testing, and excellent communication skills to educate healthcare providers about Tempus assays and technologies. Tempus' proprietary platform connects an ecosystem of real-world evidence to deliver actionable insights to physicians, guiding treatment decisions for patients.

We are considering candidates residing either in Chicago or in a field-based location within the US.

Responsibilities

  • Provide medical support to strategic account managers (Precision Medicine Program Managers) to facilitate successful management of research discussions and intake of study concepts for potential collaborations.
  • Engage academic Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and investigators in oncology to foster collaborative external research with Tempus, including investigator-initiated trials, assay grants for biobank samples or prospective trials, and real-world retrospective data studies.
  • Proactively seek opportunities to incorporate Tempus assays into high-impact external research, including collaborations with cooperative group trials and pharmaceutical trials (company-sponsored or investigator-led).
  • Identify data gaps and clinical unmet needs in key cancer types relevant to Tempus assay platforms or molecular signatures.
  • Assess investigator-submitted study proposals for completeness, clarity, feasibility, clinical and scientific merit, and strategic value.
  • Serve as a research liaison between internal data scientists and external academic investigators for all study-related communications, including iterative workflows for reviewing analyses and study results.
  • Support medical writing of abstracts, data presentations, and manuscripts based on external research study collaborations.
  • Facilitate engagements with potential research collaborators through regularly scheduled specialty-specific Tempus+ Working Group meetings, involving faculty from various academic and community oncology centers.
  • Manage and leverage KOL relationships cultivated through study collaborations to support broader research and educational interests for the organization.
  • Collaborate with the Medical Affairs Team and other internal teams to support medical advisory boards.
  • Contribute to the team's tracking and management of the External Research Portfolio, including abstract and publication planning/execution.
  • Support the development and management of a Medical Research Strategy and Scientific Exchange Plans to guide the prioritization of new external research investments. This includes conducting biannual clinical reviews of unmet needs for biomarkers in immunotherapy and targeted therapies, tumor response monitoring, and minimal residual disease across various cancer types.
  • Liaise cross-functionally with internal stakeholders in Medical Affairs, Marketing, Sales, R&D, Clinical Development, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, and AI engineers.
  • Attend oncology conferences and cooperative group research meetings to connect with KOLs and provide comprehensive meeting synopses and summaries of high-impact scientific content.
  • Continuously update internal stakeholders on relevant medical and scientific knowledge and proactively share market intelligence.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of Medical Science Liaison or other Medical Affairs experience in the diagnostics, biotech, or pharmaceutical industries is required.
  • Ability to project manage up to 25-30 individual study collaborations in different stages.
