Senior Manager, Firefox Machine Learning

Why Mozilla?

Mozilla Corporation is a technology company backed by a non-profit organization, dedicated to improving the internet for the past 25 years. We are the creators of pioneering brands such as Firefox, a privacy-focused web browser. With over 225 million monthly users globally, we are actively shaping the future of technology and advocating for an internet that prioritizes people over corporations. Our work spans diverse fields including AI, social media, and security, all while remaining committed to our core mission of making the internet a better place for everyone.

Mozilla Corporation is fully owned by the non-profit 501(c) Mozilla Foundation. This unique structure means we are not accountable to shareholders, but solely to our mission. Collaborating with thousands of volunteers worldwide, Mozillians design, build, and distribute open-source software, empowering individuals to experience the internet on their own terms.

About this Team and Role

The Firefox Machine Learning team is focused on developing and scaling AI-powered features for Mozilla's flagship product. Our goal is to make the browser more intelligent, helpful, and user-centric. As the Senior Manager for this team, you will lead engineering and ML initiatives to develop, train, and deploy Generative AI models and features directly within Firefox. You will play a key role in shaping how millions of users interact with the web daily.

You will guide a team of accomplished ML engineers who operate at the intersection of user experience, privacy, and cutting-edge research, driving Mozilla's commitment to making powerful AI accessible to all.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead and Grow Team: Lead and mentor a team of ML engineers focused on developing Generative AI models and integrating them into Firefox experiences.
  • End-to-End ML Development: Drive the complete lifecycle of machine learning product development, from initial research and prototyping through model training, evaluation, deployment, and ongoing iteration in production.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner effectively with product, research, design, and platform teams to deliver user-facing features powered by both proprietary and open-source AI models.
  • Technical Strategy: Define and execute the technical strategy for ML initiatives, ensuring alignment with Mozilla's mission and the Firefox product roadmap.
  • Champion Excellence: Promote engineering best practices, foster an inclusive environment, and maintain a user-first approach throughout all stages of feature development.

What You'll Bring:

  • Experience: 10+ years in machine learning, with a minimum of 5 years in technical management roles.
  • Production ML: 5+ years of experience building and deploying ML or Generative AI systems in production, including hands-on experience with LLMs, transformers, or multimodal models.
  • Team Leadership: Proven success in managing high-performing engineering teams to deliver AI features to a large user base.
  • Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of modern ML development frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow), scalable training and inference infrastructure, and MLOps practices.
  • On-Device ML (Plus): Experience with developing and deploying machine learning models on devices is a significant advantage.
  • Privacy-Preserving ML (Plus): Familiarity with techniques like differential privacy or federated learning is a plus.
  • Education: Master's degree or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field (or equivalent industry experience).
  • Communication Skills: Strong ability to articulate complex technical concepts and translate them into actionable plans for cross-functional collaborators.

Commitment to Our Values:

  • Welcoming Differences: Cultivate an inclusive and equitable team environment.
  • Relationship-Minded: Build strong, trusting partnerships across Mozilla and the wider community.
  • Responsible Participation: Advocate for the ethical and privacy-conscious application of AI.
  • Grit: Lead with resilience through ambiguity, pursuing impactful goals with persistence and creativity.

What You'll Get:

  • Performance Bonuses: Generous performance-based bonus plans for all eligible employees, reflecting our shared success.
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Rich medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Retirement Contributions: Generous retirement contributions with immediate 100% vesting.
  • Quarterly All-Hands: Participation in quarterly all-hands meetings.
