Position Overview

BigCommerce is seeking a full-time Senior Infrastructure Engineer to join our Infrastructure Engineering team. This role is responsible for designing the underlying technology stack that powers BigCommerce stores and building the systems and tools that enable engineering teams to build and ship BigCommerce services. We are looking for an experienced candidate with a blend of software engineering and web operations skills, often referred to as a "DevOps Engineer" or "Site Reliability Engineer."

This position can be fully remote in the continental United States, based in Austin, or based in San Francisco.

Responsibilities

  • Apply software engineering and SRE principles while leveraging infrastructure automation tools to build, maintain, monitor, and operate complex infrastructure.
  • Work as part of the Infrastructure Engineering team, specializing in web operations, systems administration, and software engineering.
  • Design the underlying technology stack that powers BigCommerce stores.
  • Build the underlying systems and tools that enable engineering teams to build and ship BigCommerce services.
  • Glue infrastructure and software together.
  • Drive issues to completion, marshaling resources in high-pressure situations.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience in building software for, operating, or supporting large Linux-based web application environments.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work well with geographically distributed teams.
  • Obsessive attention to detail, ensuring systems and scripts are clean, well-documented, and comprehensible.
  • Passion for learning new technologies and languages.
  • Experience with UNIX systems administration, including solid scripting skills in Golang, Ruby, PHP, or Bash.
  • Experience running Docker with an orchestration system such as Nomad (we use Nomad), Kubernetes, or Amazon ECS.
  • Knowledge of configuration management systems such as Ansible, Chef, or Puppet (we use Puppet).
  • Understanding of scalable web architectures and cloud technologies.
  • Proficiency in coding, with experience working in multiple programming languages, primarily Golang, Ruby, and Scala.
