Requirements

Candidates must possess 12-15+ years of experience in credit underwriting at major banks, with a deep understanding of underwriting and portfolio performance management, balancing traditional banking rigor with fintech pace. A Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Accounting, Economics, Statistics, Math, or a similar field is required, with an advanced statistical background (PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, or quantitative field) strongly preferred. Proven track record across diverse portfolio types including co-brand credit programs, subprime lending, consumer credit cards, and commercial credit cards is essential. Expertise in Excel and SQL modeling, along with strong programming and data analytics experience in R or Python, is necessary. Experience in capital markets (ABS, securitization, warehouse lines) and fraud management is highly preferred. Exceptional communication skills are required to represent Marqeta credibly with senior executives, customers, and partners, along with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Responsibilities

The Senior Director, Credit Risk will lead the underwriting team, developing and designing strategy to launch and scale successful credit programs, establishing Marqeta as a disruptive force in the credit space. Responsibilities include mentoring and developing a world-class team of credit risk professionals, driving innovation to establish best-in-class credit strategies and underwriting models, and representing Marqeta at the highest levels with customers and partners. This role involves scaling the credit underwriting organization, overseeing portfolio performance and account management, building and refining underwriting models, and proactively monitoring and adjusting credit policies. Additionally, the position entails establishing credit strategies for co-brand, consumer, and commercial credit card programs, enhancing underwriting and risk documentation, partnering with product to build modern credit stacks and data strategy, providing risk consulting services to bank partners and customers, and reporting KPIs to senior management and external stakeholders.
