Senior Developer

Position Overview

Portable is seeking a Senior Developer who thrives on solving complex technical problems in service of meaningful impact. You will work across multiple applications and systems, bringing deep technical expertise in cloud environments (Azure or AWS) paired with the flexibility to adapt across a diverse tech stack. You write clean, thoughtful code and understand that good development involves building the right things, the right way, in the right context. You are comfortable navigating Microsoft or open-source environments and possess a solid understanding of architecture, performance, and modern development practices. Beyond coding, you are a team player, offering guidance to junior developers, providing constructive feedback during pull requests, and collaborating with designers and producers to deliver integrated solutions. You enjoy mentoring and are continuously learning, demonstrating curiosity, generosity with knowledge, and openness to new approaches.

We are a team of over 50 researchers, strategists, designers, technologists, and producers working towards our mission from our head office in Collingwood and remotely from co-working spaces and homes across Australia.

This role is within our Design Services team, comprised of over a dozen multidisciplinary human-centered designers and producers who focus on understanding and defining the needs of people and organizations, guiding them through a design process to create impactful solutions.

• Experience: Significant experience as a Senior Developer, having worked on a variety of different applications throughout your career.

Responsibilities (Example Week)

A typical week as a Senior Developer at Portable might involve:

• Coding: Implementing new APIs for a transport project and adding new elements to the UI components for a geospatial project.
• Mentoring: Pairing with mid-level or junior developers on features, providing directed advice and guidance for their professional growth.
• Code Review: Reviewing pull requests to foster team and individual growth in code quality.
• Knowledge Sharing: Leading or participating in "Deep Dive" sessions to enhance developer skills in specific technologies.
• Project Collaboration: Working with producers to plan new features and contribute to the execution of overall project architecture.
• Agile Planning: Participating in sprint planning, writing Jira tickets, and breaking down tasks to create learning opportunities for junior developers, with dedicated time for mentoring during pairing sessions.

Compensation and Benefits

• Salary: $115,000 to $140,000 plus superannuation.
