Senior AI Engineer

Position Overview

Khan Academy is seeking a Senior AI Engineer for a 24-month fixed-term contract. This role will focus on leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) to enhance our educational platform and deliver innovative product capabilities. You will contribute to projects aimed at improving learning outcomes for students, particularly those in historically under-resourced communities, by integrating cutting-edge learning science and AI technologies.

The Role

As a Senior AI Engineer, you will work on impactful projects, including:

• Integrating state-of-the-art learning science into our product to help learners and teachers identify and address learning gaps effectively.
• Collaborating with public school districts to build and scale teacher and learner tools for millions of students.
• Developing tools for teachers to strategically use Khan Academy in their classrooms.
• Harnessing the power of AI, including the recent launch of Khanmigo, to deliver enhanced product capabilities.

Requirements

• Experience: 5+ years of experience building world-class product experiences for interactive web applications, including scalable backend services and complex, stateful frontend user interfaces.
• Generative AI/LLMs: Proven experience using Generative AI/LLMs to build products. This includes knowledge of prompt engineering techniques, current generative models, and engineering techniques like Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).
• Technical Project Management: Strong skills in technical project management, as Senior Software Engineers often lead projects.
• Software Development: Experience building and maintaining complex software, writing clean, maintainable, testable, and quality code.
• Soft Skills: Strong communication, thoughtfulness, and a willingness to give and receive regular feedback.
• Empathy: Deep empathy for learners worldwide and a passion for helping others learn to love learning.
