Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license from the Board of Nursing - active license in the state of practice (South Dakota and Minnesota) upon hire
  • Visual acuity adequate to perform position duties
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds
  • Knowledge and skills sufficient to integrate the use of healthcare technology and/or information management systems into the preadmission nursing role

Responsibilities

  • Obtain medical history on pre-surgical and clinical radiology special patients and provide education
  • Assist in completing charts for surgical procedures, radiology special procedures, and other areas as directed
  • Perform applicable assessment, triage, planning, education on interventions/options, and evaluation of outcomes
  • Provide support and follow-up calls per outlined protocols
  • Facilitate referrals to local physicians and community services
  • Ensure hand-offs between services are completed
  • Collect patient health data
  • Document nursing history for assigned patients via phone interviews
  • Initiate anesthesia record and home medication record
  • Assure appropriate in-hospital referrals are completed (e.g., pastoral care, anesthesia, patient representative)
  • Explain procedures and treatments to patients to gain cooperation, understanding, and decrease apprehension
  • Provide general surgical/clinical education and instructions to interviewed surgical patients, respond to patient questions, and refer patients
  • Make decisions and actions on behalf of clients consistent with the ANA’s Code of Ethics
  • Collaborate with the patient, significant others, and healthcare providers in providing patient care
  • Utilize research/evidence-based findings in practice if appropriate
  • Participate in department or unit quality improvement activities
