  • Ability to function as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations

Responsibilities

  • Assist other health care members in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures (e.g., OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders, including blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD)
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide interventions as prescribed
  • Monitor patients’ response to dialysis therapy
  • Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion, perform functions for treatment discontinuation, and document
  • Discontinue dialysis per procedures, evaluate patient prior to venous access termination (standing/sitting BP), obtain hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Perform and record pre- and post-dialysis evaluations, weight, and vital signs with initial identification
  • Calculate and enter patients’ dialysis machine programming for UF goal, treatment time, and UF modeling
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Record vital signs and treatment parameters on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
  • Document patient treatment information, including Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes if applicable
  • Report significant information or changes in patient condition to RN or supervisor
  • Observe patient and conduct machine safety checks per facility policy; report changes to RN or supervisor
  • Perform and document interventions for unusual patient status and patient response
  • Evaluate vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), intervene as needed, document, and report unusual findings
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills immediately with appropriate disinfectant
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision and assist as needed
  • Setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and clean working environment
  • Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and CQI activities, including patient satisfaction and process improvements
