Ability to function as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations

Responsibilities

Assist other health care members in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures (e.g., OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing
Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluation
Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders, including blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD)
Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide interventions as prescribed
Monitor patients’ response to dialysis therapy
Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion, perform functions for treatment discontinuation, and document
Discontinue dialysis per procedures, evaluate patient prior to venous access termination (standing/sitting BP), obtain hemostasis, and apply dressings
Evaluate patient prior to discharge
Perform and record pre- and post-dialysis evaluations, weight, and vital signs with initial identification
Calculate and enter patients’ dialysis machine programming for UF goal, treatment time, and UF modeling
Ensure safety alarms are enabled (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Record vital signs and treatment parameters on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
Document patient treatment information, including Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes if applicable
Report significant information or changes in patient condition to RN or supervisor
Observe patient and conduct machine safety checks per facility policy; report changes to RN or supervisor
Perform and document interventions for unusual patient status and patient response
Evaluate vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), intervene as needed, document, and report unusual findings
Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens
Clean blood spills immediately with appropriate disinfectant
Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision and assist as needed
Setup and operate hemodialysis machines
Assist in maintaining a safe and clean working environment
Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and CQI activities, including patient satisfaction and process improvements
