Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with organization policies, procedures, training, and compliance with corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including setup and operation of hemodialysis machines
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing pre- and post-dialysis evaluations
  • Proficiency in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments, including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
  • Competence in documenting on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, and reporting changes to RN or supervisor
  • Ability to conduct machine safety checks, intervene in intradialytic problems, and monitor patient response per physician orders
  • Skills in laboratory specimen preparation, blood spill cleanup, supply management, and maintaining a safe/clean environment
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Involvement in staff-related activities, including recruitment for new staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access patency, cannulate, and administer heparin
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic issues, and intervene as prescribed
  • Discontinue treatment, obtain reinfusion vital signs, ensure hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling) and enable safety alarms
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and complete documentation accurately and timely
  • Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Perform/document interventions for unusual patient status, vascular access monitoring, and machine safety checks
  • Obtain laboratory specimens, clean blood spills, manage supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor and assist patients with self-care under RN supervision
  • Participate in staff recruitment process
