Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
Ability to obtain and record pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and evaluations
Capability to monitor patients during treatment, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Knowledge of machine safety checks, hemostasis, dressings, and blood spill cleanup procedures
Ability to prepare laboratory specimens and manage supplies/equipment efficiently

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD, UF goals)
Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient response, and document
Perform vascular access cannulation, heparin administration, hemostasis, and apply dressings
Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming; ensure safety alarms are enabled
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and evaluations accurately and timely
Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN or supervisor
Conduct machine safety checks, clean blood spills, prepare lab specimens, and manage supplies
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff
Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements
Maintain safe and clean working environment
