Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
  • Ability to obtain and record pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and evaluations
  • Capability to monitor patients during treatment, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
  • Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Knowledge of machine safety checks, hemostasis, dressings, and blood spill cleanup procedures
  • Ability to prepare laboratory specimens and manage supplies/equipment efficiently

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD, UF goals)
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient response, and document
  • Perform vascular access cannulation, heparin administration, hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming; ensure safety alarms are enabled
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and evaluations accurately and timely
  • Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN or supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks, clean blood spills, prepare lab specimens, and manage supplies
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment
