Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with organization policies, procedures, training, and compliance with corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including setup and operation of hemodialysis machines
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing pre- and post-treatment evaluations
  • Proficiency in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments, including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), ultrafiltration (UF) goals, treatment time, and UF modeling
  • Competence in enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits - NVL 160) and conducting machine safety checks
  • Accurate documentation skills for vital signs, treatment parameters, Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, and progress notes
  • Ability to report significant patient changes or unusual findings to registered nurse or supervisor
  • Capability to clean blood spills, prepare laboratory specimens, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Support for staff recruitment process

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per prescribed orders, monitor patient response, and intervene for intradialytic problems as directed
  • Discontinue treatment, obtain hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and complete documentation with initial identification
  • Observe patients, perform machine safety checks, and document interventions for unusual status
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures) and report unusual findings
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens, and ensure blood spills are cleaned
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment to prevent wastage
  • Monitor and assist patients with self-care under RN supervision
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment
  • Actively participate in QEP, CQI, process improvements, and staff recruitment
