Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Knowledge of patient education on adequacy measures (e.g., OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to perform vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Competence in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders
  • Knowledge of intradialytic interventions, safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160), and UF modeling
  • Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Observation and reporting skills for patient conditions and machine safety checks
  • Ability to handle laboratory testing, specimen preparation, blood spill cleanup, and supply management
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access for patency
  • Perform pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Cannulate vascular access and administer heparin as delegated
  • Initiate dialysis treatment (e.g., set QB, QD, UF goal, treatment time)
  • Monitor patients during treatment, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs before reinfusion, discontinue treatment, achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge and record pre/post evaluations
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and perform/document machine safety checks
  • Document vital signs, treatment parameters, and interventions accurately
  • Report significant changes or unusual findings to RN or supervisor
  • Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions, and document
  • Obtain and prepare lab specimens; clean blood spills
  • Prepare and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently; monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment
  • Support QEP, CQI, patient satisfaction, and process improvement activities
