Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
Observation and intervention skills for patient and machine safety checks

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access patency, cannulate access, administer heparin
Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders, including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), intradialytic interventions
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Monitor patient response, perform machine safety checks, report changes/unusual findings to RN/supervisor
Document vital signs, treatment parameters, interventions, pre/post evaluations on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Obtain laboratory testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills, manage supplies/equipment to prevent wastage
Evaluate patients prior to discharge, ensure hemostasis and apply dressings
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff
Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements for patient satisfaction and goals
Maintain safe and clean working environment, setup/operate hemodialysis machines
