Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Knowledge of patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Skills in evaluating vascular access for patency, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluations
  • Competence in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD, UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Proficiency in enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Accurate documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Observation and machine safety checks per facility policy
  • Ability to perform laboratory testing preparation and specimen collection
  • Maintenance of safe, clean environment, including blood spill cleanup
  • Efficient use of supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
  • Monitoring self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Assists in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients and inquire about wellbeing
  • Evaluate vascular access, cannulate, and administer heparin as allowed
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, including blood and dialysate flows
  • Monitor intradialytic problems, patient response, and provide interventions as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs before reinfusion and perform treatment discontinuation functions
  • Discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled
  • Record vital signs and parameters on treatment sheets with initial identification
  • Document all treatment-related information accurately and timely
  • Report significant changes or findings to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks and report unusual findings
  • Document interventions for unusual patient status and responses
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures) and intervene/report as needed
  • Obtain and prepare lab specimens
  • Clean blood spills immediately with disinfectant
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
