Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients and inquire about wellbeing
Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders (QB, QD)
Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems per physician order
Monitor patients’ response to dialysis therapy
Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion and perform discontinuation functions; document
Discontinue treatment per procedures, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), obtain hemostasis, apply dressings
Evaluate patient prior to discharge
Perform and record pre- and post-dialysis evaluations, weight, vital signs with initial identification
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Ensure safety alarms enabled (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Record vital signs and treatment parameters on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
Document patient treatment information (Treatment Sheet, progress notes if applicable)
Report significant information or patient condition changes to RN or supervisor
Observe patient and conduct machine safety checks; report changes to RN/supervisor
Document interventions for unusual patient status and patient response
Evaluate vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), intervene, document, report unusual findings
Obtain prescribed lab testing and prepare specimens
Clean blood spills immediately with disinfectant
Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff on appropriate programs
Setup and operate hemodialysis machines
Assist in maintaining safe and clean working environment
Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements
