Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Knowledge of patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Skills in vascular access evaluation for patency, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluation
  • Competence in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD, UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ability to evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, and monitor patient response
  • Skills in performing hemostasis, applying dressings, and evaluating patients prior to discharge
  • Proficiency in machine safety checks, enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Accurate documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, and reporting changes to RN/supervisor
  • Ability to observe patients, conduct machine checks, and document interventions
  • Skills in vascular access monitoring (arterial/venous pressures) and interventions
  • Ability to obtain laboratory testing and prepare specimens
  • Knowledge of cleaning blood spills with appropriate disinfectant
  • Efficient use of supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
  • Ability to monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Assists in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients and inquire about wellbeing
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate, and administer heparin as allowed
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD)
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems per physician/RN direction
  • Monitor patient response to therapy
  • Obtain vital signs before reinfusion and perform discontinuation functions; document
  • Discontinue treatment per procedures, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Perform/record pre- and post-dialysis evaluation, weight, vital signs with initials
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms enabled (e.g., NVL 160)
  • Record vital signs and parameters on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initials
  • Document treatment info completely (Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Report significant info/changes to RN/supervisor
  • Observe patient and perform machine safety checks; report issues
  • Document interventions for unusual status and patient response
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment, intervene, document/report findings
  • Obtain prescribed lab tests and prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills immediately per policy
  • Prepare/organize supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe/clean working environment
  • Support QEP, CQI, process improvements for quality goals and patient satisfaction
