Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including setup and operation of hemodialysis machines
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing pre/post dialysis evaluations
  • Capability to initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders
  • Proficiency in machine programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goals, treatment time, and UF modeling
  • Ability to enable safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
  • Accurate documentation skills for treatment sheets, progress notes, and vital signs
  • Observational skills for patient and machine safety checks
  • Ability to collect laboratory specimens and clean blood spills per policy
  • Efficient use of supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
  • Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD flows), monitor patient response, and intervene as prescribed
  • Discontinue treatment, obtain vital signs, ensure hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patient before discharge
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and interventions on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet
  • Document all treatment-related information and report changes to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks and report unusual findings
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures) and intervene/report as needed
  • Obtain and prepare lab specimens; clean blood spills immediately
  • Prepare and organize supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on programs
  • Maintain safe, clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
